The Callatis Music Festival - August 11 - 17
The Callatis Festival began in 1998 and has expanded ever since. Every year the Callatis Festival has a few themed nights. There is Europa Top Hit night, where all the major Romanian music stars gather, the folk music night, the Miss Diaspora night, where Romanian girls living in foreign conutries compete with each other in a beauty contest. August 15 is the Dormition of the Theotokos in the Orthodox church; in Romania it is also related to Sailors' Day. On this last day huge fireworks are used to light up the sky above Mangalia.
Navy Day - August 15
After the Romanian War of Independence in 1877, the Dobrogea Region (The region by the Black Sea) was retuned to Romania after five centuries of Ottoman control. The Romanian Navy was then equipped with Military ships and Romania began commercial shipping.
On August 15, 1902 the first Navy Days was celebrated at the Port in Constanta where they shot fireworks from the Cruiser "Elisabeta." That tradition continues today along with sailing competitions, various Naval ceremonies, and the remembrance of those lost at Sea.
Class 1 Romania Grand Prix – August 28 – 30
The Class 1 World Powerboat Championship is an exhilarating and breathtaking spectacle. It brings together the latest in million dollar, state-of-the-art technology, an array of spectacular venues from the golden sands of the Arabian Gulf, the steely blue waters of the Norwegian Fjords and the sun drenched coasts of southern Europe and an international group of teams and racers who remain a breed apart in professional sport and compete for the most coveted prize in world powerboat racing – the Sam Griffith Trophy.
It is a supremely competitive sport with driver and throttleman strapped into ‘jet fighter’ canopies, where 42ft powerboats, weighing five tons and powered by twin 900hp engines race at perilous speeds exceeding 160mph in always unpredictable conditions. A sport fuelled by adrenalin; a powerful and passionate display of skill and courage, creating a theatre of excitement and drama for the crowds who flock in their tens of thousands to watch real racing at its limit.
Mamaia Festival – August 18 - 24
The festival has a long tradition and is organized yearly, in the first days of September. It has three sections: performing, creation and songs (pop, pop-rock, dance and ethno-dance).
This event is broadcasted live on the National Television. It has a high budget (provided by its organizer Constanta County Council) and brings together the most important pop-music composers and artists. This Festival is considered to be one of the biggest cultural events in the country.
The festival is named after the resort of Mamaia, which is considered “the pearl of the Romanian coast”.
