The isolation, Bohemian life, and nonconformity are the main characteristics of these two tiny fishermen villages. Each summer they attract students, artists, and young Bohemians in search of an alternative to the “classical” amusements, turning them into real hot spots. Here you forget about civilization, conventions, fixed hours, rush and everyday troubles.
During the communist regime, the two isolated villages were meeting places for intellectuals and artists, mainly because they could talk freely about issues considered taboo at that time – political, social and cultural matters. If in 2 Mai the atmosphere is calmer and more relaxing, Vama Veche is the place of entertainment. Here, once the sun has set the parties on the seashore begin. What can be more pleasant than dancing barefoot on the cool sand, to the guitar rhythms while being caressed by the salty sea breeze
The beach is wild and the sea deepens rather suddenly. Only experienced swimmers venture to the shipwreck, a real “star” of Vama Veche. In the Southern part of the beach the rusty framework of the former ship still floats, making some unusual sounds because of the wind which crosses its prow.
The many rustic restaurants and terraces lying right on the beach, where you can find fish dishes and other local specialties but also traditional Romanian dishes, are very tempting for everybody who comes here. In most of the places you can have a good and very affordable meal. As for accommodation, you can stay for a reasonable price at the new board and lodgings which have appeared over the last years. For the less conventional ones there is also the possibility of camping. Whatever choice you make, you will be close to the beach and you will always smell the salty sea and feel the hot sand.
For those who want to be close to the sea, to hear the waves crashing into the shore, and to spend unforgettable nights by the campfires or the reed terraces, 1 Mai and Vama Veche are the most appropriate locations.
